It is a very cold day, highs only in the mid teens. These two squirrels were “frozen” in place for several minutes on the trunk of this maple tree. There were no predators visible from our back door, however these guys seemed to be in the classic “Don’t move or that thing will catch and eat us!”
A lovely photo! Thank you!

I’ll bet that they are warming themselves up by standing still in the sunshine. I do the same thing in the backyard this time of year! Maybe I was a squirrel in a different life… π

It’s good to be cautious in the squirrel world.

So true, those pesky birds of prey and carnivorous mammals can be rather a bother. Thanks, Tim.

Oh my goodness, while I’m sitting here writing, I’m watching the squirrels in my backyard. They’re enjoying my patio and the sun. Adorable little creatures, xxoo, C

That they are, C. Every yard should be blessed with a scurry of squirrels.

I think these are what we call “red squirrels”. They chatter a lot if they see our little dog. Your photos have captured them well.

They must have considered you the predator.

Very possibly, Geoff. Sometimes they notice movement in the door window, sometimes they seem like they could care less even when we open the door and the screen door.

Or were they basking in the sunlight?

That is also a good suggestion. I think a combo of both: something spooked them to freeze, then the sun felt good! π
