Seen in our backyard…
The Cardinal is one of the most well known and recognized birds. It is the official state bird for Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. That is the most states having the same bird. Cardinal brings a striking splash of color whenever he comes into our yard.

We see these fellows in our backyard all the time. Usually a mom and dad pair.

Thanks, Matt, we see the pairs as well, just have yet to get a shot of both together. 😉

I’m in North Carolina and they are in our backyard all the time! They seem to love our Crepe Myrtle trees very much and we have a gang of them in one of them on most days!!

It is fun to see a flock of Cardinals, we usually just see one pair. Think ours are pretty territorial.

Old Italian belief…when you see a cardinal, you are going to get company.

They are beautiful. We don’t have cardinals out here, in bird form that is.

I was actually thinking of “other types” of cardinals when I was posting this. 😉

I guess it is no coincidence that these states are clustered together. I’d think they could be more creative in naming a state bird.

Illinois was first to name the Cardinal, beyond that I don’t know. I do know the Meadowlark is for six states. Again not much variety…
