Nature plays a trick on us

A couple of days ago we posted a picture of a white Asiatic lily bloom that was on an individual plant that has always produced colorful blooms. This was a puzzle, and we asked if anybody knew, botanically at least, what was the story here. (Thanks to those who responded to our questioning!) Imagine our surprise when we noticed a change in color of that white bloom this morning.

The color on Wednesday, 6/14

This transformation from white to faint coloring was not really expected, but has brought a great deal of interest. We had a long soaking rain yesterday, perhaps that had something to do with the change? It is going to be fun watching if further darkening of the color will take place. Nature is amazing, be it the complex cyclical changes of the seasons to the simple change in color of an intricate bloom.

  5. Your white lily is keeping up with the times and decided to identify as a pink lily. A lot of our white flowers get pink edges or take on pink hues as they age. I don’t know why.

  9. I have no idea why they are changing color, but they’re so pretty! For the first time in ten years of living in my current home, I have these really blooming well in my back yard. We have so many rabbits and they love to eat all the leaves until there is nothing left but a stick, which not surprisingly, is bad for the plants. I managed to scare them off some of them last year by packing my dog’s shed fur around their bases, but this year a family of foxes moved into the neighborhood, which reduced the rabbit population, and for the first time ALL of them have managed to bloom. As far as I can tell, they have been consistently pink, but now I will have to watch.
