Tasty food, good beer and live music at Broad Ripple’s 317 B.B.Q. & Taproom

On the near north side of Indianapolis is the village of Broad Ripple. It is well known for an eclectic mix of local dining, unique shops and vibrant nightlife. Sher was checking out some of the clubs and found the 317 BBQ & Taproom. It sounded interesting and advertised live music Sunday afternoon. Off we went with our son driving.

We were fortunate and found street parking within a few feet of the entrance.  It was pretty hot, but the inside of the facility was wide open with high ceilings and several large fans which made the seating acceptable. The on tap menu was filled with local brews. The two we tried were very good.

With the name of “317 BBQ” we were of course curious of what the menu offered. The menu opened from a bar code was rather limited, however we all found items to order. The BBQ baked beans with beef brisket pieces was very tasty. The fried ocra was very hot , crispy and quite tasty. The waffle fries also were hot right from the fryer. Our son really loved the warm biscuit covered with honey butter.

While we were enjoying our drinks and food the band was getting ready on the outside patio. There were tables with umbrellas and tents set up for the band to provide a bit of shade. When the band started they played a nice mix of blues, jazz, and as advertised, several Beatles tunes. The heat was too much for us to handle for any length of time, so we did not stay for long listening to the live music.

All in all, we all really enjoyed our visit to the 317 BBQ and Taproom. The food portions were large, Everything was delicious. The beer on tap that Sher and I had was very good, we would both order again. The staff was very friendly and met our needs completely. Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum

When three Greek brothers opened Zaharakos as a candy store in Columbus, Indiana in 1900 they opened what has become one of the finest historic ice cream parlors in America. Located in the heart of downtown Columbus this shop has become a marvelous place to get ice cream treats, excellent dining and exposure to hundreds of original artifacts from the heydays of 1900 era soda fountains. In addition there are multiple original and replica mechanical music instruments.

The 50′ marble topped mahogany backed soda bar. This is where all those ice cream delicacies are created for your pleasure

Sher and I have enjoyed several trips to Zaharakos over the years including introducing family members to the wonderful treats with ice cream made on site. The restaurant menu is filled with classic Hoosier comfort food. Walking around the facility feels like being in a museum with all of the beautiful items from the history of soda fountains through the years.

There are several mechanical musical instruments including the 1908 Welte orchestrion that play occasionally in the shop. The Welte machine is one of the few remaining that are still in their original location. The Banjo-Orchestra machine  arrived at Zaharakos June 26, 2013. This replica was built by the D.C. Ramey Piano Company in Marysville, Ohio.

Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor is without a doubt worthy of a visit when you are in or near Columbus. Always a delight to see, this unique store always goes overboard during holidays with beautiful seasonal decorations.  This is the Zaharakos website.

Little Sheba’s Restaurant is a gem in Richmond, Indiana

We were on another day trip, this time to Richmond, Indiana, the county seat of Wayne County on the Indiana – Ohio Border. We took US Highway 40, the National Road, stopping at several yard sales along the way. By 1:30 pm it was time to eat.

After a stop at one place on The Chocolate Trail in Richmond, the proprietor recommended Little Sheba’s Restaurant for lunch. Her quick description of the menu turned out to be spot on!

Little Sheba’s  Restaurant is in one of the historic districts in downtown Richmond. We were very pleased with both the service and the quality of our meals. You should definitely put Sheba on your list for potential eating places in Richmond. This is the Little Shebas’ website.
