Supreme Court to rule on legal steps against homeless

NPR WFYI Indianapolis this morning announced:  Today, the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing a major homelessness case for the first time in decades, with arguments over whether people can be punished for sleeping outside if there’s no shelter available. The decision could have sweeping implications for the record number of people living in tents and cars, and the cities and states struggling to manage them.

The current case before SCOTUS today is from Grants Pass, Oregon, said to be a symbol of how widespread homelessness has become across the country. The debate before the court goes back to two rulings by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, one in 2018 and one in 2022. Both said that under the Eighth Amendment  it would be cruel and unusual to impose criminal and civil penalties on  someone for sleeping on public land. Today’s case, Grants Pass v. Johnson, challenges those rulings.

Mariska Hargitay was filming yet another episode of the 25th season of the hit TV show “Law and Order: SVU,” when a young girl spotted the  star. Thinking she was a real police officer, she asked Hargity for help. Seems she had been separated from her mother at a nearby playground and needed help finding her.

The star, who plays the heroic detective Olivia Benson on the long-running TV show, immediately stopped the filming for 20 minutes while she and the girl found her mother for a joyful reunion. Witnesses said the girl did not even notice the film crew or Hargitay’s co-star Ice-T.

Alaska Airlines resume flights after FAA grounding

All scheduled flights by Alaska Airlines were grounded by the FAA “out of an abundance of caution,” the airline said. Wednesday the airline was performing an upgrade to its system that calculates weight and balance when a problem was detected that forced the shutdown order from FAA officials. An hour after the grounding, Alaska determined that the problem had been resolved and the order was lifted, much to the relief of all parties concerned.
