What to do and so many choices.  That is the situation we are in.  We sold our spacious 4 bedroom home with an in-ground swimming pool 5 years ago.  Our kids were all grown and college educated and we were ready for a big change.  So we sold our house and bought an RV to travel the country.  And that is what we did for 5 wonderful, exciting years.  Then coronavirus struck and shut down the US.  Being of the 65+ older population, yes we are “baby boomers”…we decided to play it safe and stay in our small 2 bedroom house in Indiana.  Plus, we have our youngest son, who is unmarried and takes care of the house while we are gone, that would be able to help us.  You know, grocery shopping, picking up our meds and etc.

Then we fast forward, or slowly forward to today.  Should we continue our adventures or should we acknowledge we are getting older and stay put?  It’s a big decision for us.  Our kids live in Washington state, Texas, Ohio and Indiana, we’ve always had fun visiting them while we travel.  We are pretty healthy and able to get around and take care of ourselves.  We’ve spent a winter in Harlingen, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley which we loved.  We were enjoying wintering in the Hill Country west of Austin when the virus hit the US and then we got coronavirsed in after retuning to Indiana.  We were going to spend this winter’s months in the southern part of Texas and visit our Texas family while there.

So, maybe writing it down has helped me see things clearer and I’m questioning why I’m even thinking of giving up our adventurous traveling lifestyle. We just wish we could get our COVID-19 vaccines sooner than later.

  1. My first thoughts were to keep the RV and begin traveling again after you guys are vaccinated but being safe too. That RV is a sizable investment I’m sure! I have to wait until I can get on the county list for the vaccine, regardless of my medical issues it seems. Stay safe, guys! 😎

    • It seems odd, though I guess somewhat understandable that states have different vaccine program rules. It is frustrating that the ‘experts’ used to talk about the underlying health concerns being important but now it doesn’t seem to be a priority as far as vaccine distribution. Hope you can get yours soon, John. Stay safe my friend!

  2. You have the right idea, though. As long as a person is healthy after retirement, taking to the road is a great reward for a life of work and raising family (AKA, more work!). Best wishes for getting the vaccine and for the time you can get back on the road!

      • Andy tells me in his way to tell you, “Me-ow!” Yes, being blessed with the means to enjoy what you like to do can’t be under appreciated. I am physically unable to do many of the things I used to enjoy most, but have found other things – this blog among others – to keep upbeat and positive. Here’s to the time you can return to your peregrinations!

  3. I’m glad you figured it out! The most this baby boomer couple can do is day trips of about 3 hours one-way, at the max. We are not about to stay in a hotel overnight! Vaccines are rare here in Florida. Either that or people stay up all hours of the night to be able to log on and secure a vaccine appointment as soon as one becomes available. It’s quite nuts. So we wait…. Good luck to you guys with the vaccine and your travels.

    • Amen to the no hotel ruling! We don’t even like to have to use restrooms except in our RV. Here in Indiana you have to be 70+ or first responer/health care. We’re waiting for the 65+ and underlying health conditions groups allowed. Hope you can get your shots soon!

  4. I found your musing interesting. We didn’t start on the RV lifestyle until we were in our late 60’s and got off the road temporarily when we bought in a gated community, and realize we are too young to live here. We are in our 80’s and want to get back on the road. We met the most wonderful people who would always be glad to help you. We have contemplated trading up, our MH but Miranda has been a trooper and still has a lot of life. Good luck with your decision, it would be fun to meet you on the road. Take care and stay safe.

  5. I wish you the best of luck getting the vaccine. I know it is only a matter of time for me, but I hate being the weakest link in the family because of personal medical issues. But you are in that group that really should be able to get it for the asking. I hope it happens soon.

  7. You really look like a spry Jerry Garcia in that photo. Since you are never too old to Rock and Roll, and you two are much too young to die, I would say keep up the adventures. You might even make in down here to the wilds of Corrales one day,

  11. Since you have family spread across the country– good rest stops– it sounds like you still have travel adventure in your veins– so go for it. Just be safe and get that vaccine as soon as you are able. From a fellow baby boomer.

  12. Getting the vaccine next week. (UK) still a scary space to step out into. I’m all for a few months hibernation. Moved all my counselling calls online. Now if only I could find a way of having reliable internet on the road I could keep that business going and travel in my van. We’ll see what unfolds.

  17. Yes. It’s been a long wait. Jon has an appointment for his vaccine on 2/8. I’ve not been so lucky and will continue to log in until I can get one. We expect to be back on the road in a couple of months. Hope you will too.

  18. Continue your dream! My Dad has a small RV and can’t wait to get on the road again. But he’s also waiting for his vaccination and on top, the borders to Italy where he likes to spend his time are still closed. We all hope for the vaccine and the summer.

    • Now that we have appointments for our first dose of the vaccine, we are already beginning to plan for our first post vaccine travel. We think we’ve got many more travel years ahead. Thank you for the visit and the encouraging comment.
